Guests can sometimes get a glimpse of these areas when they go to the ship's medical facility or disembark on a gangway when going ashore in port.

Double-shared cabins are in most cases very tiny and they don’t have portholes (windows). Each crew cabin is equipped with its own bathroom, which is also very small. Crew members living in these cabins are responsible for cleaning their cabins regularly by themselves. You need to use your own washing products that you can purchase in a crew shop known as “slop chest”.
With two people in a 120-square-foot space, most cabins are usually furnished with a bunk bed to make use of the small space. Some crew members get curtains for additional privacy in their bunk bed quarters. Nathan shared that in the entertainment role things could change a lot! Some days Nathan would work up to 8-9 hours, but some days it would just be one hour of work.

In addition to the live cooking station is a standard buffet, which has a salad bar, fruits, cheeses and cold cuts, and a section of hot foods like meats and side dishes. This is similar to the live cooking stations we passengers see in the Windjammer buffet.
You have probably been wondering where the crew members throw their garbage. Saving and taking care of the environment is a high priority for cruise lines, and there are numerous programs applied to maintain and save the ocean and the environment in general. Now, the canteens for crew members are known as crew mess and staff mess. Since crew members are out to sea for months at a time, they need a dedicated place to manage those coifs. There's also a dedicated front or back deck for the staff to enjoy the sunshine on lounge chairs. On larger ships, there are multiple crew laundry areas, which resemble laundromats.
Staff Mess
All crew members must be familiarized with the ship’s layout, fire zones, main crew/guest areas, emergency stations, and all relevant to the ship’s safety and how to manage emergency situations. Besides the crew bar and a coffee shop, there is normally a dedicated area for the crew who wants to play pool table games, table tennis, table football, darts, and other social games. Cruise ships feature an internet cafe where crew members can surf and chat with their friends and family back home. This room is equipped with a multitude of computers that crew members can also use to do their job duties, more specifically the company-assigned tasks and trainings, and other online and IT-related jobs.
You need to time your morning showers and so on properly – otherwise, you will be late for your shifts,” they added. Crew cabins are located on several decks, from deck zero (below sea level) to deck 2 or 3, with the exception of bridge officers who live higher up closer to the Bridge and their workplace. Water on cruise ships is usually potable, however, it is strongly recommended to use bottled water that you can buy in a crew shop for a reasonable fee.
Every cruise ship has its own slop chest, which is basically a store where the crew can buy snacks, water, soft drinks, hygiene products, cleaning items, and more. It normally consists of an inside area and so-called “back deck”, an open deck where smoking is allowed and where parties and crew events take place. You need to pay for the drinks in a crew bar (starting at $2 per drink), except when the HR department throws theme or “all crew parties” where they offer free soft drinks and beers for all crew members.
There isn’t a lot of space to put toiletries especially if you have to share the space. There is a single wardrobe for each crew member and the space to keep your empty luggage comes down to creativity. Depending on how new the cruise ship is will determine how well the cabin is set up and how new the amenities are inside the cabin. Sometimes, you may get lucky that a previous crew member has left behind a DVD player or a stereo. Keep reading to see just how luxurious Captain Faevelen lived while he was commanding one of the world's largest cruise ships. At the end of the day, the stateroom that a crew member is assigned to is based on their position.

American Symphony’s first cruise is set to depart August 27th from New Orleans, and American Cruise Lines plans to christen the riverboat during its inaugural cruise on August 30th in Natchez, Mississippi. Live music in the lounges and expert “Riverlorian” lectures keep passengers entertained. The informative lectures and talks on key cultural and historical sites along the Mississippi River are a passenger favorite and help give important context and background to the ship’s ports of call.
The ship will be christened in Natchez, Mississippi, on August 30 during the inaugural cruise. Two Lifts (passenger elevators in the Atrium) connect all decks. After the float out, American Symphony was positioned in Chesapeake’s East Outfitting Basin where she will receive her upper decks and outfitting. I requested one song and he remembered my name for the rest of the cruise. He kept the room clean, emptied the trash, replaced coffee pods, and changed towels while we were out. Dallas, the historian delivered amazing lectures. We hated to miss some when we were off the ship. A knob on my wife's walker came off and the handle was loose. Mark Hood checked the busses for the knob and got a nut to replace it.
Steven and Tiffany, the bus drivers were smooth and helpful with the walker. The guides on the busses were knowledgeable and entertaining. Bill Cummings, the hotel manager was everywhere helping and checking on things. All staterooms feature a private, step-out balcony accessible from the living area via a sliding, floor-ceiling glass door.
Taking a cruise on such a vessel will undoubtedly be an unforgettable experience. Music-wise, expect a mix of different American musical genres in the lounges, from jazz to bluegrass to a little bit of country and more — but don’t expect the entertainment to reach long into the night. American Symphony tends to be most popular with mature passengers, most of whom will retire soon after dinner or a casually social nightcap at most. The ship is powered by 2x Caterpillar marine engines running on low-sulfur diesel. These modern engines require less fuel and produce fewer emissions (COx, NOx, SOx) and soot particles in comparison to other boats on the US river cruising market.
The river echoes with the music that was born there, in the iconic recording studios of Muscle Shoals where legends created songs that would become the soundtrack of America. Civil War battles were fought, and rockets were developed to send men to the moon in unassuming small towns along the shore. Be treated to the many treasures of the Tennessee River region, from exploring the capital of country music to tasting the world’s best whiskey. We did the Lower Mississippi cruise from New Orleans to Memphis on March 15th.

I always keep a list of gift card numbers and PINs used on a cruise until it's over, in the unlikely case of a refund/cancellation scenario. You can add the value of a gift card anytime during the cruise, not only when OBC is used up. Probably trying to save themselves some hassle of refunding any balance to the gift card. A gift card from Carnival Cruise Lines can only be used on Carnival Cruise Line purchases. A couple of years ago, I took enough quizzes to buy enough Carnival cards, at a 10% discount, to entirely pay for a 14-night Carnival cruise for 2 people in a full suite. I'm going to assume that you had an enjoyable cruise other than the experience with the gift card.
Do I Have to Be an AARP Member to Buy?
I think I started into looking at it or registering, but don't recall spending much time on it. I might try it again sometime as 15% is pretty generous. As long as you are willing to spend time on quizzes to spend less money for the cards. Before you buy the cruise cards, you’ll definitely want to read through all the fine print that’s provided on the AARP website about their use.

You can either purchase a physical card to send enclosed with a personal message or choose a digital version that the recipient can open online with personalized audio and photos. My Experience With Princess Gift Card
So a $2,000 cruise becomes $1,800 just with buying the cards through AARP. If you are headed on an expensive cruise, it may be that you have to purchase over multiple months to get all the gift cards you need. However, when we tried to register for a free AARP account, we repeatedly reached an error page. When we went ahead and joined as paying members (the charge is just $12 a year), we were able to sign-up with no issue. Once signed up, we were able to access all the gift cards available.
Thanks for any information, as I have a lot of gift cards to use but don't want to apply too many. All gift cards are in U.S. dollars and not accepted on ships using a different onboard currency. You can transfer the gift card to another user since there are no names on the cards.

To apply a Princess Cruises Gift Card to your folio, you must present your Gift Card to the Passenger Services Desk onboard your cruise. During the busy holiday period, please note that orders using standard shipping methods may be delayed by an additional 3-5 business days. Orders using expedited shipping may be delayed up to an additional 2 business days. I guess the software just can't handle all those numbers and a PIN for those gift cards. IDK if that is a joke in light of my recent post on the Allstate gift cards, but Canada and US (Mexico as well) are treated as a single market.
I’m Not Over 50 Years Old. Does That Mean I Can’t Get the Discount?
Fpsphil is correct but Guest Services gets slammed during the last days on the cruise. Agree - I think the best use of them is to pay the balance owing on the cruise. I would say that their software is editing for US-only area codes. Might be cell carrier too, but easiest just to check area code. Totally agree that it is a bummer since our countries are so inter-twined. If I want them bad enough, I am lucky to have a brother living in USA, so I could get him to buy them and reimburse him.
Use them to pay the cruise fare, with some restrictions, or apply them toward onboard credit to cover specialty dining, beverage packages, spa treatments, gift shop purchases and other items. If you want to apply the gift certificates as payment for expenses on the ship, you'll need to redeem them online 10 days before the sailing date. They cannot be used for government taxes, fees, gratuities or casino play.

I sincerely hope no one else has to experience this. It may be a mere $100 but the hurt that it caused my family member to feel is much greater. If, for instance, you purchase a physical Princess Cruises gift card valued at $100 USD or more, you will get free First-Class USPS shipping.
Then, during 4X gas points at Kroger, DH bought $500 in Princess gift cards and I applied those to the booking. We still had a few $100 balance left, but it was three weeks before final payment. Then the cruise fare dropped enough before final payment that we had already overpaid for the cruise. We received the refund back to our credit card, not to a gift card. That being said, the credit cannot be applied towards the cruise fare.

The SPA relented rather than continuing to fight a long, expensive and losing battle.
Charleston, South Carolina
Despite its popularity, Charleston Cruise Port is a relatively small part of the main seaport, with only one cruise ship pier capable of handling full-sized cruise ships. Given its limited capabilities, it is only used as a homeport for a single cruise line – Carnival Cruise Line. Charleston, South Carolina, has been a prominent departure point for many of the world’s top cruise lines for years. Charleston cruise port terminal is located at the Union Pier, in the historic district of the city's downtown.
This is a gracious city of antebellum 18th- and 19th-century houses and sprawling plantations, easy to appreciate from the comfort of a horse-drawn carriage. The city’s unique Lowcountry cuisine and dozens of delicious restaurants make it a popular southern foodie destination. Enjoy warm southern hospitality and a breezy waterfront as you prepare to depart on your cruise from Charleston. Its deal with the city still allows 104 cruise ships per year, with up to 3,500 passengers per ship.
As a bonus, the port even offers complimentary parking and shuttles from the parking lots to those with vehicles displaying a valid handicap placard or identification card. There are some cruise lines that do make calls at the port, including Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line. As mentioned, Carnival Cruise Line is the only cruise line that uses Charleston as a homeport; however, others make temporary use of the port by featuring it as an occasional departure point and port of call. Overnight parking costs $17 per day, but we recommend pre-booking your spot, as you can save money and guarantee you will have a parking space. The parking lot is patrolled overnight by port police, so it is a safe location to leave your vehicle. The concept plan also includes relocating of all cargo shipping operations from Union Pier.

Rulings were made and fresh appeals were filed, with the legal challenges never reaching a resolution. The City Council ultimately approved the SPA's plan for a north-end terminal and a new residential neighborhood on Union Pier's south side, but the opposition never faded. Using almost half for a terminal and surface parking for passengers is absurd,” Dana Beach, then-head of the Coastal Conservation League, told The New York Times in 2011. "We've always looked at it as a bottom line trade-off between maritime business and non-maritime business," Jim Newsome, who retired last year as the authority's president and CEO, said of Union Pier. That trade-off shifted when Charleston took off as one of the nation's hottest real estate markets.
After that deal is finished, the Ports Authority said it will continue to follow a voluntary limit of no more than 104 cruise ship visits a year, and no stops by ships that carry more than 3,500 passengers. Charleston cruise port passenger terminal is located on 196 Concord Street. Cruise passengers should go to Gate 2 of the Union Pier Terminal, the entrance of which is at the Concord and Laurens intersection near Washington Street.

Now that it doesn't have to pay for traffic enforcement, parking attendants and other support services a full-time ship demands, the authority will realize a greater profit margin — and perhaps greater profit — from those short visits. Although Charlotte’s tourism economy may suffer from the decision, officials believe it is the right decision for the city’s future.
