The project was officially approved on April 10th, and works started on May 1st, with planned completion in Fall 2019. On July 8, 2021, MSC and Fincantieri signed a contract for the construction of PortMiami's newest MSC Cruise Terminal. The project (valued ~EUR 350 million/~USD 414M) was signed by Pierfrancesco Vago (MSC) and Giuseppe Bono (Fincantieri). The new terminal was officially opened/inaugurated on December 7, 2017, MSC Seaside's scheduled dock in PortMiami was on December 21, 2017. In December 2016 started construction works for renovating and expanding "Terminal F" to be able to homeport MSC Seaside in December 2017.
Port of Palm Beach, Florida
Early in 2023, the proposal emerged again, with a plan to add another terminal and redevelop its existing cruise center and its piers, enabling the accommodation of larger ships. The port also is a popular port call for cruise ships offering a variety of West Coast sailings. The Port of Seattle, circa 1911, has two cruise terminals that together accommodated 983,539 cruise guests in 2022, making it the 10th-busiest cruise port in the country. Port Canaveral officials in April 2023 revealed they intend to construct a new cruise terminal, at a cost of around $175 million. The port has not yet revealed a project timeline, nor has a cruise line partnership been announced, but the port’s goal is to eventually have the capacity to accommodate up to 6.4 million cruise passengers per year. Here is Cruise Hive’s list of the top 10 busiest cruise homeports based on cruise guest traffic, including passengers on home-ported ships plus port call visitors.
CRUISES FROM MIAMI

Based on 2016 passenger traffic numbers reported by CLIA, Miami cruise port was ranked world's largest (4,898 million pax). Follows the list of world's busiest cruise ports with annual shipping traffic over 1 million passengers. Virtually all of the major cruise lines have a presence at PortMiami, particularly during winter seasons when Caribbean cruising is at its peak. Port Canaveral's cruise terminals serve several major cruise shipping companies. Terminal 5 is the homeport for ships of RCI-Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, NCL-Norwegian, Marella UK. In recent years, Port Canaveral has surpassed Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades as the world's second busiest cruise port in multi-day embarkations.
Port of San Juan (Puerto Rico)
In August 2015, commissioners approved USD 81 million port development project for upgrades of terminals 5 and 10, aimed at handling larger-sized vessels (details in the "terminal" section below). Discovery Princess has also made Seattle its home, sailing on seven-day Alaska itineraries out of the Emerald. Dubbed World Cruise Center, the Port of Los Angeles features three terminals. Cruise lines that homeport in the World Cruise Center include Princess, Norwegian and Celebrity Cruises (you'll find Carnival in the adjacent Port of Long Beach). Port Canaveral is 50 miles east of Orlando on Florida's Space Coast, not in Orlando as is often billed on cruise itineraries. Sandwiched between the gargantuan ports of Cape Canaveral to the north and Port Everglades and PortMiami to the south, the Port of Palm Beach is quite modest.
Another fantastic Ketchikan activity is seeking out the Ketchikan totem poles. This beautiful Alaskan cruise port is home to the largest collection of totem poles in the world, each representing a unique story of the local native tribes. Roughly a half-hour drive from downtown Los Angeles, the port was founded in 1907 but had been used as a trading and cargo port since the early 19th century. A bid to expand its cruise facilities surfaced several years ago but was sidelined by the pandemic.
Miami - user reviews and comments
If you do miss your ship, you'll have to either meet it at the next port or fly home (at your expense). If this happens, it's important that you call your ship or cruise line as soon as possible so they know where you are. They can also assist you with making transportation arrangements and/or retrieving your belongings.
In 2018, PortMiami implemented the NOAA agency's (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) PORTS system (Physical Oceanographic Real-Time System). The system is a public-private partnership for reducing in-port ship accidents (by over 50%) and transit delays for commercial shipping traffic. PortMiami's annual benefit from the PORTS system was estimated at around USD 300 million.

Port of Palm Beach: Why You Should Drive to a Cruise in Palm Beach, FL
Starting May 12, 2019, the ship operates year-round scheduled 4-5-day "long weekend" Bahamas cruises. Departures are on Thursdays (4-day itinerary to Freeport and Nassau) and on Mondays and Saturdays (5-day itinerary to Amber Cove Dominicana and Grand Turk Island). From now on you can easily download the port guides you need and save them on your tablet or mobile device. Many luxury ships, and some expedition lines, use it as a base to go to Alaska, as opposed to Seattle. Located on the shores of the Mississippi River, the New Orleans cruise port is right near the heart of the city. With more than 300 miles of Intracoastal Waterway and navigable inland canals, Fort Lauderdale has earned the nickname Venice of America.
FY2018 (Sept 2017-Sept 2018) was another (4th consecutive) record year, with 5,8% growth in containerized cargo volumes (total 1,084 million TEUs) and 4,7% increase in cruise shipping (total 5,592 million passengers). Cargo shipping growth was attributed to the seaport's USD 1 billion investments in infrastructure improvements that allowed handling of Post-Panamax ships (with min draft 12 m / 40 ft). In 2018, the port handled over 250 such vessels, following a deep dredging project and the installation of Super Post-Panamax gantry cranes.
In February 2023 was subcontracted PowerCon AS (Hadsund Denmark-based engineering and manufacturing company specializing in electrical power conversions) to deliver 5x shore power systems for cruise vessels. For this particular project was established the subsidiary PoweCon USA. When completed (2023-Q4), the combined shore-power system will be the world's largest.
Parking decks are available near both the Pan American and Old San Juan piers. Pan American Pier parking is available at the Sheraton or neighboring Isla Grande Airport. Parking is outdoors and varies greatly between $8.56 per day to $22 for valet.
Adjacent to the larger and busier Port of Los Angeles, the Port of Long Beach caters to Carnival cruisers in the sprawling Los Angeles area. Carnival, Norwegian, Disney and Royal Caribbean all offer four- to nine-night cruises from New Orleans to the Panama Canal, the Bahamas and everywhere in between. For Mississippi River cruises, American Cruise Lines and American Queen Voyages offer year-round jaunts as far as Memphis.
Especially for Disney Cruise Line ships was built Cruise Terminal 8. In 2018, two port development projects received funding for maintenance works in the seaport. For the projects were allocated USD 14,76 million (Canaveral Harbor Sand Bypass and jetty upgrades) and USD 1,47 million (Harbor and Locks). In 2021, Navigator of the Seas marked Royal Caribbean's return to California for the first time in more than a decade, sailing year-round from the Port of Los Angeles. Contrary to other ports in North America and owing to the sprawling nature of the Los Angeles metro area, the World Cruise Port and the adjacent Long Beach Port aren't particularly close to LA's main attractions.
